Grateful Bowls Food Truck
I partnered with Chef Saige Larner to design a brand for his Grateful Dead inspired food truck.
Grateful Bowls is a Portland based food truck that fuses Korean and Mexican flavors into vibrant rice bowls. Drawing inspiration from the countercultural spirit of the Grateful Dead, the brand needed to capture both the energy of live music culture and the comfort of a hearty, fusion-forward meal.
The Challenge
Portland’s food truck scene is saturated with bold culinary concepts and playful branding. Grateful Bowls needed to stand out while communicating three distinct elements:
- The culinary fusion of Korean and Mexican flavors.
- The Grateful Dead-inspired ethos—community, creativity, and free-spirited energy.
- An accessible, memorable identity that could scale beyond a single truck.
The primary challenge was avoiding clichés—balancing homage to the Dead’s iconic aesthetic without alienating non-fans, and ensuring the food itself remained the star.
The Execution
-
Logo: A circular emblem featuring a rice bowl radiating colorful waves—an echo of the Grateful Dead’s dancing bears and sun motifs, but reinterpreted through food.
-
Color Palette: Psychedelic hues balanced with earthy tones to represent the natural ingredients and grounding quality of rice bowls.
-
Typography: A custom, hand-lettered logotype inspired by 1970s concert posters paired with clean sans-serif type for legibility.
-
Truck Design: A rolling canvas featuring tie-dye gradients and playful food illustrations. Its design doubled as a photo backdrop, inviting customers to share their experience on social media.

The Conclusion
Grateful Bowls demonstrates how branding can elevate a food concept into a cultural experience. By harmonizing the improvisational spirit of the Grateful Dead with the boldness of Korean-Mexican fusion, the brand carved out a unique identity in Portland’s competitive food scene. The result is more than a meal—it’s a shared moment of flavor, community, and joy.
